Arctic Tern
The Arctic tern is a bird species known for its impressive annual migration, which takes it from its breeding grounds in the Arctic to its wintering grounds in the Antarctic and back again. With a sleek white body, a black cap, and long tail streamers, the Arctic tern is a graceful and agile flyer, capable of traveling thousands of miles each year. It is known for having the longest migration of any animal, covering roughly 44,000 miles round trip. The Arctic tern feeds primarily on fish and other marine creatures, catching its prey by plunge-diving into the water from great heights. It nests in colonies on coastal cliffs and islands, laying its eggs in simple scrapes on the ground. The Arctic tern is a highly vocal bird, with a range of calls and squawks used for communication within its colonies.
