Arctic Ground Squirrels
Arctic ground squirrels are medium-sized rodents found in the Arctic and subarctic regions of North America. They have a compact body, short legs, and a bushy tail. Their fur is a mix of brown, gray, and white, helping them blend in with their tundra habitat. These squirrels are known for their hibernation habits, spending up to 8 months of the year in a state of torpor to survive the harsh winter conditions. They are skilled diggers, creating complex underground burrow systems for shelter and food storage. Arctic ground squirrels are omnivores, feeding on a variety of plants, insects, and small animals. They play an important role in their ecosystem as prey for larger predators and as seed dispersers.
