American Hockey League
The American Hockey League (AHL) is a professional ice hockey league based in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1936, it serves as the primary developmental league for the National Hockey League (NHL). The AHL consists of 31 teams as of the 2021-2022 season and is known for its high level of competition and talented players. Teams in the AHL compete for the Calder Cup, awarded annually to the playoff champion. The league provides a platform for young players to develop their skills and advance to the NHL, making it an integral part of the hockey development system in North America.
